Dalziel pupils’ art work goes on show
On Thursday, January 19, the work of Dalziel High School Art and Design students Brenna Donnelly, Jodie Graham and Dawn O’Neill, Music Abby Sloan and English students Lucy Milligan and Hollie Bowes was showcased and celebrated at the annual Creative Residency exhibition.
This prestigious event was held in Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life, Coatbridge.
North Lanarkshire Council’s Creative Residency is a unique and successful initiative where S4 pupils from across all of North Lanarkshire’s secondary schools can use it as a vehicle to further develop and enhance their creativity as young artists, designers, musicians and creative writers; in a realistic context that is highly relevant to young people.
The success of the Dalziel High pupils was clearly exemplified throughout the process, cumulating in the highly successful achievements displayed at the exhibition event.
After previously attending a series of taster sessions that highlight the various creative disciplines on offer to young people at the start of the year, pupils were encouraged to submit an application and samples of their work to enable them to participate in a week long arts residency at Kilbowie Outdoor Centre, Oban in June.
The rigorous application process is the first step in allowing pupils to experience the initial challenges of the Residency. In September the pupils then undertook further additional learning alongside their school studies as they participated in the Masterclass, where they honed and refined their newly found skills previously explored whilst in Oban. Finally, the work produced from the Residency experience and the Masterclasses was showcased at the successful exhibition on January 19.
The immersive and collaborative approach of the Creative Residency in North Lanarkshire is an excellent example of the type of high quality opportunities, learning experiences and real life challenges for young people that are intrinsic to the core principles of Curriculum for Excellence; the development creativity and of skills for learning, life and work. Dalziel High School is extremely proud of the pupils and their achievements within this process. The exhibition is on until February 19.
