Youth arrested in drugs swoop

- Ross Thomson

A teenager was this week arrested for drugs offences as police swooped on two homes and recovered cannabis worth over £8,000.

The 18- year- old man was detained by officers after they raided a house in Darragh Green in Newmains last Wednesday morning.

Police came across a six plant cannabis cultivation at the address as well as equipment associated with growing the drug.

All six plants, valued by police at £ 2,500, and the equipment were seized with the 18-year-old set to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court at a later date.

In a separate incident later that day, at around 6.30pm, police then targeted a house in Pather’s Earn Crescent.

A further six plant cultivation, equipment and over 100 grams of herbal cannabis were taken by police from the property.

Police estimate that the street value of those drugs was an estimated £6,000.

A 64- year- old man was arrested and will appear in court at a later date.

Sgt Neil MacLeod, from Wishaw Police Office, said: “These arrests just goes to show cannabis cultivations continue to be common place in and around the Wishaw area despite the obvious potential dangers they pose to not only those operating and running them, but the householders living in their close proximity.”

Last week the Wishaw Press reported on a morning of action by police on Friday, February 10, which saw three homes in Newmains targeted by officers from Wishaw Police Office’s Community Investigation Unit.

On that day 49 cannabis plants, worth around £12,000, were removed from a flat in Isla Avenue as well as a host of items associated with growing the Class B drug including growing tents and lights.

Also discovered was approximately 200 grams of cocaine with an estimated street value of £6000.

Herbal cannabis was found at homes in Tiree Crescent and Park Drive.
