Neighbours annoyed by cars on pavements

Action calls

- Gary Fanning

Fed- up residents have hit out selfish motorists who are parking illegally in two Cleland streets.

Neighbours are outraged over vehicles sitting on pavements in Gorsehall Street and Fraser Street.

And the issue was discussed at last month’s Cleland Community Council meeting held in the Senior Citizens Hall in the Main Street.

One community councillor said: “In Fraser Street, they park on the pavement.

“The issue is really bad in the Parkside area.

“Some people are using their houses as business premises and there are cars parked everywhere in the street. “Gorsehall Street is also bad.” Ward councillor John Taggart sympathised with residents but says it is difficult to deal with the issue.

Councillor Taggart said: “I don’t know what can be done about it.

“Sometimes it is better that vehicles park on the pavement rather be a hazard to the other road users.

“That is as long as people can get past on the pavement without having to step onto the road.

“Some people leave their car out on the road rather than keep in their driveway to slow traffic down on the road.”

Ppolice can take action if a vehicle is causing an obstruction on the pavement.

A North Lanarkshire Council spokesman said: “We have no powers to deal with inconsiderate parking, however, if a vehicle is parked in such a way as to prevent pedestrians from using the footway, Police Scotland have enforcement powers to deal with this as an obstruction of the public road.”

Anyone concerned about illegal parking on the streets should contact police on 101 or is their a problem in your street, then call our newsdesk on 01698 205205.
