Views sought on 600 homes

Residents left in the dark over plans

- Michael Temlett

Overtown and Waterloo residents are still in the dark over a proposed 600 home development in the area.

After a consultation with developers Holder Planning last November, it was revealed at this month’s Overtown and Waterloo’s Community Council meeting that members of the public are still being asked for their views.

The controversial proposals have long been a hot topic for residents who are fearful of the long-term effect on the increase of traffic and school places.

Whilst members believed they received a fair hearing at the meeting with developers, they claim they are still rolling on with their plans although a final report has not been issued.

Community council member David Crichton said: “We were listened to and our concerns were heard but now they are sending out more emails looking for more information.

“Despite our concerns it seems like they just want to carry on with these plans and ignore what we have to say.”

Fellow member Jim Brownlie added: “I felt the consultation went well and we were given a good chance to discuss all the points we wanted to cover. We don’t have any problems with people coming in to Overtown and Waterloo and building houses.

“The main problem is the amount of houses and how that will affect everyone. The traffic will become unbearable and kids will struggle to get spaces at schools.

“We thought we had managed to put our points across well to Holder Planning but now we’re being asked for our thoughts again.”

The land was originally greenbelt and was designated a site of Interest for Nature and Conservation (SINC) by North Lanarkshire Council.

Last year, the Scottish Government recalled all appeals for 100 units or more to ensure their policy to build more homes is implemented – with a report submitted to Scottish Ministers following the consultation.
