No rest for ‘Baby’ Butch’ after win

8 weeks to title fight

- Michael Temlett

Iain Butcher cruised to victory on Saturday night – and enjoyed two days off before getting back to business.

The Jer viston fighter dismantled Gyula Dodu in the first round at MTK Scotland’s show in Paisley.

But Butcher could afford little time to rest as he gets set for his British super-flyweight title shot against Charlie Edwards at the Hydro.

Butcher is part of the massive Ricky Burns undercard, which also features Newarthill boxer Charlie Flynn as he fights for the Celtic title.

‘ Baby Butch’ was thrilled with the manner of his victory and admits he was as nervous as ever before the bout.

He said: “There was a lot of pressure on me because I had to be as professional as possible with everyone already wanting to move on to the next fight.

“I had to get through Saturday before I could think about it but our gameplan worked well.

“My brothers had gone through a clip of the other boy and we knew he was from a MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) background so he would keep his hands high. I listened to my brothers in the corner and they helped me through it.

“Because it was over so quickly I was training in the dressing room just after the fight and I gave myself a chance to rest before I was back out running on Tuesday.

“I’m back into training again and I’ll be working with the nutritionist to make sure I’m in top shape for April.”

Butcher will be sparring with Commonwealth Games gold medallist Paddy Barnes and current Commonwealth and WBO Inter-Continental super flyweight champion Jamie Conlan as he ramps up his preparation.

He said: “I don’t want the level of my training to die down so it’s important to keep going.

“I’m sparring with Paddy Barnes and Jamie Conlan and that will help me keep as sharp as possible.

“It’s going to be a tough eight weeks but well worth it.”

Iain would like to thank his sponsors C& C Transport in Motherwell and IHE Stainless Steel Limited in Glasgow.
