Survival surge as Dalziel win again Comfortable victory over Orkney boosts bid

- Michael Temlett

Dalziel picked up a huge win in their bid for survival in the BT National League Three on Saturday.

The Dalziel Park outfit moved to 12 points clear of the tenth-placed Perthshire in the last relegation place with a 36- 12 victory over Orkney.

The hosts started started strongly and took an early 3-0 lead through an Andrew Glover conversion.

From the restart, Dalziel scored their first try as George Sloan fielded the kick off and the ball was played to Callum Weir who offloaded to Glover who surged towards the line.

But as he neared the line, Glover played in Lee McWhinnie to make it 10-0 after 10 minutes.

On the 25 minute mark, Glover missed a penalty attempt, but Dalziel scored again soon after.

Burrell ran in for Dalziel’s second try of the day before Glover missed a tricky conversion as Dalziel opened up a 15 point lead.

But Orkney hit back immediately, as William Thomson intercepted a loose pass and raced away to score. Graham Poke converted to pull Orkney back to within eight points.

After the half time whistle Dalziel restored their lead as Burrell slid in for his second of the day and Glover made the conversion.

Dalziel were playing some nice rugby and were managing to get clean ball to the outside, but each time Orkney were able to force them into touch.

The hosts were awarded a penalty and Donnachie kicked to the corner. Kris Watters secured the line out and a maul was set up.

Dalziel drove over the line, and Bowles was able to dot down to secure the bonus point for Dalziel. Glover converted and Dalziel were 29-7 up.

Winger Burrell had time to add his third score of the day after fighting off two tackles.

Glover nailed the touchline conversion and Dalziel were looking good at 36-7 with less than five minutes left to play.

Orkney were going to have the last say in the game and for four minutes lay siege on the Dalziel try line.

Dalziel looked to have held them out, but eventually visiting hooker Scott Rendall snuck through a gap to score.

Poke missed the conversion and Dalziel claimed the 36-12 victory.

The Second XV lost 39- 19 to Carrick. Ross Mitchell and Michael Burnett both scored either side of a penalty try. Davie Stewart added two conversions.

The Third XV lost 38-24 to Annan with tries coming from Chris Wilson, Ross Hamilton and Scott Hamilton.
