Have your say on speed bumps

- Gary Fanning

People living in two streets where there are plans to introduce traffic-calming measures have been urged to have their say on the proposals.

Councillor Robert McKendrick urged residents living in School Road and Newton Drive to contact the council to make their views known on the prospect of installing speed bumps on the road.

Speaking at last week’s Newmains Community Council meeting, councillor McKendrick said there were mixed views on the plans and added:“I would encourage people to write into Civic and the community should decide.

“We must do what the majority of the community wants.”

John Harper, chairman of Newmains Community Council, said:“We want to take a view on it but people are people are welcome to write in with their views to North Lanarkshire Council.

“I am in favour controlling traffic near schools.”

North Lanarkshire Council plans to install four sets of speed cushions in School Road after funding of £10,000 was approved by the Wishaw Local Area Partnership.

Five sets of speeds cushions are proposed for nearby Newton Drive, near St Brigid’s Primary.

Last month as part of the council’s budget for 2017-18, there were plans for a new joint campus for Newmains and St Brigid’s Primary.

Anyone wishing to have their say to the trafficcalming proposals can do so by Wednesday, March 29.

They should write to head of business for legal and democratic solutions, North Lanarkshire Council, Civic Centre, Windmillhill Street, Motherwell, ML1 1AB.
