Primrose Orchestral Flutes On Sunday evening Carluke Primrose Orchestral Flutes achieved first place in the Glasgow Music Festival in Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall. They competed in the Wind Band and Orchestra category and performed three pieces. The first piece was Sven Nielssen’s ‘Take Ur ‘Picc’. The adjudicator praised the orchestra’s disciplined playing, and particularly their “superb” piccolo playing. This was followed by a performance of ‘Legal Contra-Band’, composed by Alex Abbott. The adjudicator enjoyed this piece, commenting on the “impressive” contra flutes, and “deft ensemble playing”. They closed the performance with Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Un Giorno di Regno’. The adjudicator commented on the excitement of the piece, and enjoyed their “triumphant conclusion”. Overall the adjudicator praised the “clever” choice of programme, designed to highlight their range of instrumentation. Carluke were awarded 88 points, while Flutephonics and Flutes Unlimited were placed second and third, with 87 and 86 points respectively. Their next performance will be in Kirkton Church on Saturday, March 25, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £6 and are payable on the door. The concert will be held, in aid of the Glory Christian Fellowship homes in Kenya, with whom the church has partnered for many years. The money raised will help the orphanage to purchase essentials such as school materials. All welcome. Camera Club The speaker at the meeting of Carluke Camera Club on Friday of last week was Rosemary Gillies, a leading member of Edinburgh Photographic Society. From an early age, Rosemary had a keen interest in underwater diving and these two interests were brought together in her talk about life under the waves. Rosemary discussed the water-proof equipment which is required for under water work, together with the specialised lighting equipment necessary for deep water work. All this was then illustrated by an impressive selection of her work in places such as the Caribbean Sea, the Philippines in South East Asia and other worldwide locations. The audience was treated, not only to expert guidance on the photographic aspects, but also a very well-informed description of the subjects displayed which included coral reefs, exotic seaweeds, tropical fish and much more, all in stunning colour. Club president Iain Pollock announced the results of the recent Scottish life inter-club competition, hosted, this year, by Lesmahagow Photographic Society and where Carluke Camera Club achieved a runaway score to soundly defeat all of the participating clubs. The club’s next meeting will be held in St Andrews Church hall on Friday, March 17, at 7.30pm. It will feature the club’s mono print championship, judged by Robert Fulton MFIAP, MPAGB, a leading member of Paisley Colour Camera Club. Full details can be found on the club’s website at www.carluke-cc.org.uk. Day Centre Members of Carluke Day Centre had a lovely day on Tuesday of this week at their St Patrick’s Day celebration.
