YOU SAID IT

The increased punishment for drivers caught on their phones will not change a thing say our readers.

We took to the streets to ask our if they believed the new penalties would make an impact.

Drivers face a £200 fine and six penalty points on their licence if they are caught using their mobile – even if the car is stationary with the engine on.

Joe Gunning, from Wishaw, has his doubts over whether the new punishments will have an impact.

He said:“I don’t think it will make a blind bit of difference unfortunately.

“You still see people on their phones while driving and it’s ridiculous because it’s the same as having an offensive weapon – you are putting people’s lives at risk.

“The police simply don’t have the resources to enforce this and people will continue to ignore it, regardless of the new punishments.”

Wishaw’s William Boslem hopes people will stop now the law has changed.

He said:“They shouldn’t be using their phones in the car, especially with kids there.

“It’s the same as smoking in the car because it’s a danger and you’re causing potential harm to you and others. But I think most people will still ignore it.”

Gemma Curran, who was with her son Kyle, said: “I think it’s impossible to stop everyone doing it but it doesn’t make it right.

“They’ve done the right thing by putting the punishment up though because it might make people think twice.”

Mary McCarron hopes it will have a positive effect on the roads.

She said:“It’s absolutely a good thing and it will hopefully make the roads safer.

“You put yourself at risk but also anyone else who is in your car or on the road because you won’t be paying attention.”
