Residents will be given their say on ambitious plans to rebuild six primary schools at a cost of £53m across North Lanarkshire.

Members of the council’s Schools and Centres 21 group have recommended the funding package for new schools to be built in Newmains, Chryston, Gartcosh, and Bellshill.

The proposals were given the goahead at this month’s Education Committee, with appropriate consultations to follow.

Parents and the community will be consulted over proposals for a shared campus at Newmains Primary School and St Brigid’s Primary School.

Councillor Frank McNally, convener of education at the council, said: “If approved, these proposals would see new school buildings for Chryston Primary School and Gartcosh Primary School.

“Newmains Primary School and St Brigid’s will also be brought together on a new shared campus.

“These plans are incredibly exciting and will make a positive difference to pupils, staff and the wider communities they serve.

“The latest projects, while still subject to committee approval, demonstrate North Lanarkshire Council’s vision and commitment to renewing and improving our school and community facilities.

“Our track record is impressive, confirmed with the recent opening of our terrific new 3- 18 Clyde Valley campus.”

Newmains councillor Robert McKendrick had campaigned tirelessly for new schools over the years.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” he said.

“Ou r children and grandchildren will be educated in a modern building with proper nursery provision, modern sporting facilities and most importantly a whole new safe environment for all children.”
