Cambusnethan kid picks up trophies in Benidorm

- Michael Temlett

Ross Maguire was a success in the sun as he kicked off his new season in style in Spain.

The Ca m b u s n e t ha n minimoto star headed out to the Finestrat Circuit to compete in the Benidorm Minibike Championship.

The race is viewed as the unofficial world championship with riders from all over the world taking part.

The week-long trip started in style for Ross as he showed his pace, consistently lapping faster than all the other riders despite it being his first time at the track.

On qualifying day, Ross put his Air Cooled bike first on the grid, more than a second faster than his nearest rival and repeated that feat in the Liquid Cooled class.

In the two aircooled races, Ross led from start to finish, pulling away from the field with each lap, finishing the races almost five seconds ahead of the second rider.

In the first Liquid Cooled race, the Cambusnethan Primary pupil was passed in the first corner of the start but fought back at the end of the lap and took the lead.

Ross got into his rhythm and pulled away from the other riders, winning by six seconds at the chequered flag.

In the second race, Ross led from start to finish, pushing away from the field to take his second win with ease.

The wins gave Ross his first two championship trophies of the season and puts him in a confident mood for the start of the British Championship which begins next week in South Wales.
