Landlords called to account over rubbish

Action on flytipping here

- Michael Temlett

Landlords in Craigneuk are being hunted down in the bid to halt flytipping.

Residents have been up in arms with the amount of rubbish left near the entrance to Winning Quadrant and next to overflowing bins.

Now North Lanarkshire Council and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are stepping in to put an end to the situation.

Lindsay Adam, from SFRS, told members at Craigneuk Community Council: “The rubbish in Winning Quadrant has been a problem we’ve heard about for quite some time.

“But the problem we’ve had is trying to trace owners.

“There are private landlords who don’t seem to care and are also proving difficult to find so we can talk to them.

“We have regular visits to problem areas because they can prove to be fire hazards as well as being unsightly for residents.”

One Craigneuk Community Councillor said: “I think one of the problems is people don’t have keys to get into the rubbish bins so they end up just dumping it outside.

“It makes everyone else look bad and doesn’t show the area in a good light.”

Independent Alliance Councillor Gary O’Rorke added: “We’ve had a few walkabouts in the area in the past to try and keep on top of the problem but it’s clear something needs to be done again.

“People don’t seem to realise the severity of leaving rubbish lying about and in the past home owners have been warned they could be breaching the terms of their tenancy.”

A spokeswoman for North Lanarkshire Council said: “This fly tipping had not been reported to the council.

“Officers have investigated now, however, it is on private land and the council is not able to clear fly tipping from private land.

“We would ask the public to report any incidents of flytipping to us on 01698 403110, with as much information about the people and vehicles involved, including descriptions and registration numbers, to help us identify those responsible. Fly tipping is a crime and we will pursue and prosecute those involved where possible.”
