Mobile camera bid to nick speedsters
New safety measure
Drivers in Newmains will be on high alert with the installation of a new mobile safety camera site in the village.
Following a national site selection exercise, the new safety camera, which will be in Westwood Road, is being introduced due to the concerning number of collisions on the road where speed has been a contributing factor in causing people injury.
Head of the Scottish Safety Camera Programme, Luke Macauley said: “Safety cameras are for casualty reduction and to make our roads safer.
“They must be deployed primarily where they have the greatest potential to reduce injury collisions and where there is evidence of both collisions and speeding.
“Following analysis with North Lanarkshire Council and Police Scotland it has been agreed that safety camera enforcement should be introduced on Westwood Road.”
The Westwood Road camera will be one of two new camera sites in North Lanarkshire with the other being in Coatbridge Main Street.
Alternative solutions were explored to reduce excess speed, but the camera was the only viable option in encouraging speeding motorists to slow down.
Mobile safety camera vans are equipped with a 360 degree image capture system and can detect all vehicle types – including motorcyclists.
West Safety Camera Unit Manager Alan Thomson added: “Mobile safety camera enforcement will soon take place on Westwood Road, Newmains and Main Street, Coatbridge.
“Responsible motorists have nothing to worry about, the cameras are there to detect the irresponsible road- users who believe it is okay to break the law and travel above the speed limit.
“These motorists put their own and other lives at risk and need to slow down.”
Enforcement will commence at these new locations in the coming weeks.
If you are detected speeding it carries a £100 fine and three points on your licence.
