Dad and sons were in fear of their lives
Family’s lucky escape
A parent and his boys had a lucky escape after almost being killed while walking to school.
Stuart McPherson told how feared for their lives after they were almost wiped out by a HGV while walking along the narrow pavement in Biggar Road, Cleland.
And following the near miss, he has met with council’s road boss Campbell Dyer and Councillor Robert McKendrick to see what action can be taken to prevent a tragedy in the area.
He said: “I nearly got squashed today walking the boys to school, due to the condition of the pavement at Biggar Road on the bend going over the railway bridge.
“I have contacted the council yet again regarding this so Campbell Dyer form the roads department has agreed to meet me at this location to discuss this further.”
Mr McPherson invited both Councillor Robert McKendrick and the Wishaw Press to the meeting.
Speaking following the meeting, Mr McPherson said: “The outcome is that the council need to purchase land at the opposite side of roadway to make changes to this pavement and road. They have said that this is in motion and they will keep the local councillor informed and the community council.
“I have to say I’d be very surprised if anything happens but hopefully something will.
“The volume of traffic - i.e. cars, vans, buses, HGVs - coming round that bend is shockingly unsafe and it’s a miracle no-one has been injured or worse.”
At last week’s Cleland Community Council, councillor Robert McKendrick said: “Campbell Dyer has two or three options and he will get back to us.”
Cleland Community Council have been complaining about the danger of speeding motorists and the use of HGVs in Biggar Road for several years.
A council spokesman said: “A request was made by a resident for a meeting to view his concerns over a narrow section of footway on Biggar Road, Cleland.
“Council officers and the resident met and he was advised that the council are aware of the issue and are currently considering options to improve both the footway and carriageway.
“However, there are a number of constraints and issues which require detailed investigation.”
