Nancy and her team do a fabulous job

- Ross Thomson

Members of a friendship group are reaching out to residents who may feel lonely or isolated to come along to a new event every Monday.

Overtown Friendship Group was established two and a half years ago and has a busy programme of monthly events for members.

Now the group are aiming to expand and bring more people along to enjoy the camaraderie of the members.

Friendship group organiser Nancy Pollock said: “At the moment the club has 18 members and we have various days out and hold other events. “What we want to do now is to build on that. “We will be hosting lunches every Monday in the church hall where people can come, get soup and sandwiches and enjoy an afternoon together.

“We have had success with the friendship group but we want to do more and reach out to a lot more people.

“If people are lonely you can do one of two things - you either give up or get on with your life and that’s what we are trying to do.

“We’ve already had support from local businesses such as Tesco in Wishaw who donated vouchers to help us get started.”

The lunch launch was certainly a success with Overtown Parish Church Hall packed as locals tucked into a selection of soup and sandwiches all freshly prepared by volunteers at a cost of just £3.

Group member Mary McLaughlin said: “The group has really helped me.

“I don’t think a lot of people here would be getting out otherwise.”

Former Overtown Primary head teacher Isabel George also enjoyed her afternoon.

She added: “Nancy and her team do a great job in the village.

“The group recently organised a talent show to raise funds and we had a great night.

“She’s very persuasive and even got me up singing!”

The friendship group lunches will place every Monday in Overtown Parish Church Hall from 12.30pm to 2.30pm.

Everyone is welcome.
