Taylor High
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SCOTLAND
Last week Miss MacPhail’s second year English class visited the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. They explored the different collections covering science, technology, natural history, world cultures and had the opportunity to handle artefacts and rocks, some of which were billions of years old. The most exciting part of the day was when the young people got a chance to see Dolly the sheep who was the first cloned mammal ever to be created from an adult cell, her birth was of huge excitement both to the scientific world and to the public. The young people had been exploring and discussing the ethics of this in English. Thanks to Miss MacPhail for arranging the visit, everyone had a fantastic day and the young people were a credit to Taylor High. BBC SCHOOL REPORT Forty pupils from first, second and third year enjoyed the experience of real live journalism when the Joseph Wilson Resource Centre was transformed into a BBC Newsroom for the day. The students, working with Miss MacPhail and Ms. Catherine MacIntyre (Resource Centre Manager), produced a wide range of news reports both as web pages and films, all of which can be viewed on the school website or via the BBC website. This is the seventh year the school has taken part in this annual project and as ever it was a very enjoyable and productive day. NORTH LANARKSHIRE CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to all of the pupils from first year to fifth year who took part in and finished their respective races at last week’s championships in the brutal weather conditions. Well done to everyone who took part and did themselves and the school proud. The school thanks Mr Jonathan Ryan (Acting Principal Teacher of Physical Education) for organising the event. KARATE AND KATA
Congratulations to silver and bronze medal winner Rhys Brown of second year who recently travelled to Denmark to compete in the Ishoj Karate Cup. Rhys came second in the team competition and came third in the individual competition. He competed in the Under 14s and Under 45 kilo division. Rhys is no stranger to winning as last November he travelled to Switzerland to compete and won silver in the individual competition and achieved bronze in Kata. Well done to Rhys, the school are sure you have a very promising career ahead of you in this sport. NON-UNIFORM DAY
On Friday, March 31, Taylor will be having a non-uniform day. This is to raise funds for the looming famine in East Africa. It is estimated that 16 million people are on the brink of starvation and urgently need food, water and medical treatment. The Disasters Emergency Committee ( www. dec. org. uk) have set up a crisis appeal to help those facing famine. The DEC is an organisation made up of 16 of the UK’s leading aid charities which was set up to help respond quickly to international emergencies. Pupils will be asked to pay £2 on the day to allow them to wear their everyday clothes and families/friends can make any additional donations. LIVE‘N’LEARN
As part of a drive to raise attainment and prepare for the forthcoming SQA Exams in May, Taylor invited Live ‘n’ Learn, a dynamic, innovative and inspirational workshop provider, to conduct sessions involving all of the fourth and fifth year students. The sessions focused on the mental and emotional side of preparing for examinations with a session called ‘Mindset for Exams’. The students found the sessions very motivational. DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
