Prime Minister Theresa May’s decision to call a snap general election on June 8 caught everyone by surprise and had the whole of Britain talking.
With the country set to go to the polls for the second time in just over a month, we took to the streets of Wishaw to ask residents how they felt about the decision.
Motherwell man Ian Cuthbertson believes the whole country will be getting sick of the sight of ballot boxes.
He said: “I’m fed- up of hearing about everything to do with elections and everyone will be fed-up of the polls.
“The simple reason behind Theresa May calling the election is to make her party stronger.”
Mark Fenton, from Wishaw, believes the Prime Minister could use the general election as a diversion from the bigger picture when it comes to Brexit.
He said: “It’s a distraction from Brexit right now because she had always said she wouldn’t call a general election and all of a sudden we’re getting one in under two months.”
Husband and wife Frank and June McKeever, from Netherton, believe only one person will benefit from the election.
Frank said: “We were always told it would be 2020 by the time there was an election but now Theresa May has realised she can do it for her own good.”
June added: “She knows nobody will vote for Jeremy Corbyn so she will win easily.”
