“It is Scottish Water’s responsibility to take the necessary legal action to stop any unlawful occupation of its property and have any temporary dwellings removed.

“This is an operational Scottish Water site. This means that Scottish Water needs to maintain access to the site.

“We are taking appropriate legal action and are raising proceedings at Hamilton Sheriff Court for decree of removing.

“Scottish Wat e r is planning to take some security measures to reduce the risk of this happening again. This could include the installation of bollards.”

Back in 2015, concerns were raised after more than 60 travellers set up camp in a field in Waterloo.

After the travellers left, a gate was installed at the field to prevent the same thing from happening again.

Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig councillor Gary O’Rorke believes there could be health and safety issues for those staying there.

He said: “It ’ s very concerning if people are nearby a water pump station when they shouldn’t be.

“The area is usually closed off by a gate so I want to make sure that these people didn’t break in to stay there. There are potential health hazards for people being there so we can’t have that happening.

“I know the travelling community need a place to stay but that is not an appropriate place.”
