Young and old

Group go from strength to strength

- Ross Thomson

It has already been a landmark year for Getting Better Together ( GBT) Shotts with plenty more to come.

Based in Shotts Healthy Living Centre, GBT has been going strong for the past 15 years.

They run a huge variety of activities and services catering for everyone from babies and toddlers all the way up to pensioners.

These include Bookbug and Messy Play Day for babies and toddlers, youth groups and music workshops for children and teenagers, job searching and CV building drop-ins and volunteering opportunities for all ages, plus art groups and high teas.

A community café and small coop as well as community transport and volunteer drivers service are also available.

To add to this, GBT have recently taken ownership of Springhill Hall and are looking to start a variety of new activities as well as help local community groups by offering low cost hire facilities at the hall.

GBT youth development worker Iain Whyte said: “Work has already begun on revamping the hall by creating a safe outdoor space for groups that currently use the facility. The Easter break gave a great opportunity to run free events for kids including messy play and an Easter fun day.”

While GBT are looking forward to starting new activities in the Springhill area, new projects won’t just be focused in this part of town.

A new exciting programme called Shotts Then And Now will take place throughout the Greater Shotts area including Allanton, Eastfield, Harthill, Hartwood and Salsburgh.

Iain added: “Over the next two years the programme of activities will see older and younger members of the Greater Shotts community working together to create art pieces, explore local history and local lives in the past and present, then preserve stories, information, and photographs of the local area in a way that the whole community can access.

“This is a really exciting piece of work and GBT look forward to partnering with Shotts History Group with as many community members, groups and organisations as possible to create something the whole community can be proud of and enjoy for years to come.”
