Christian Aid appeal The churches in the town are preparing for this year’s Christian Aid appeal, which sees all the churches around the town pulling together to raise funds for the charity. This year’s appeal will begin with the Christian Aid cafe which will be held during the week of Monday, May 15 until Saturday, May 20. The Christian Aid committee are already preparing for another event with residents of the town having already raised over £1000 at the recent carol service held in St Athanasius Church in December. St John’s Church The service held in the church on Sunday of last week included a soup lunch after the service, in aid of the church’s young choir Grace Notes. Thanks are given to all those who supported this event. Praise night A praise night will be held in St John’s Church on Sunday of this week, at 7pm. All welcome. Church ceilidh St John’s church will be holding a ceilidh dance at the church on May 6. The following week the church will begin their Christian Aid fundraisin­g appeal with a special service in the church on Sunday, May 14, at 7pm. The Christian Aid cafe will open at St John’s church on Monday, May 15. Day centre Members of Carluke Day Centre enjoyed an excellent luncheon on Tuesday of last week with a buffet lunch and entertainm­ent provided by the Time of Your Life. The winners of the Thursday games afternoon last week were: whist - Mollie Forgie and Margaret Burns; dominoes - F Hill, J McLaren and Betsy Wright. The next May luncheon event will be held in Masonic Hall on Tuesday, May 16, and the members look forward to their next seaside trip to Ayr followed with high tea in Prestwick on May 23. St Athanasius Parish A men’s night for over 18s only will be held in the parish hall on Saturday of this week, from 7pm to 11pm. All welcome. The girls club are holding a children’s disco for primary three to seven on Friday, from 7pm to 9pm. Entry costs £1 at the door on the night. All children in P3-7s will be made welcome. Kirkton Church The morning service held at Kirkton Church on Sunday of last week had a special theme as the minister Rev Iain Cunningham and the congregati­on had a surprise presentati­on for the church’s popular assistant Rev Susan Cowell. Susan has been involved with Kirkton Church as an assistant to the minister for the last few years and it was 30 years to the day that she had been in the ministry and she was presented with many gifts of appreciati­on and a tea with a special celebrator­y cake to mark this auspicious occasion. Craigneuk Parochial Hall Events this week includes Mondays - AA meeting at 7.30pm, jive class 7.45pm, kettle bells 7pm to 8pm, Monday to Thursday. Wednesdays - Slimming World class at 9.30am, 11.30am, 3.30pm, 5.30pm and 7.30pm. Thursdays - seniors club carpet bowls and bowls. Orange Halls Events this week begins with Craigneuk Pride of Ulster LLOL 24 meeting on Wednesday of this week, at 7.30pm. Craigneuk Imperial Ladies Flute Band practice on Thursdays, at 7.30pm and Auld Boys Craigneuk Flute Band practice on Sundays, at 6.30pm. New members welcome. Prize bingo is held on Monday nights, and the hall are open at 7pm, for eyes down at 7.30pm. All welcome. Craigneuk True Defenders Flute Band practice on Tuesday nights, at 7.30pm and Craigneuk Branch Club Apprentice Boys of Derry dance with Craigneuk True Defenders Flute Band and Feedback will be held this Saturday, April 29, from 7.30pm till late; entry £5. Overtown Brighter Village Associatio­n will be having a meeting at 33 Gillburn Street, Overtown on Thursday, April 27, at 7.30pm. This is an open meeting for anyone who has an interest in the village. The group are trying to get the Christmas lights switch on event back up and running. Last year the Associatio­n was unable do this as they didn’t have enough help from the community. However, Overtown Community Council stepped in at the last minute and for that the committee are very grateful. This year the committee would like to hold a ceremony in the community centre, but need the residents help with this. The meeting will also discuss planting, weeding, painting planters, and general tidy-up of the village. The committee would like to thank everyone who came along to help in the past and look forward to seeing them again. They will be hosting their annual general meeting in Overtown Community Centre on May 25, at 7pm, and would like to see as many people from the community as possible to get them back on track. The OK Club and B Club 7 meets in the church halls on Sunday, at 10.50am to noon. Children can come along and enjoy a mixture of stories, games, singing. crafts, painting and drawing. Sewing bee resumed this in the small church hall on Monday of this week, at 7pm, and will also be on the following Monday, May 1, before it breaks up for the summer holidays. Line dancing class resumes in the church hall today (Wednesday, April 26) at 12.30pm. It starts with the beginners and refreshers class at 1.15pm, when the main class starts
