Cops hunt attackers

Lane stabbing inquiries plea

- Ross Thomson

Police have met a wall of silence since a young man was brutally stabbed by a vicious gang in Cambusnethan.

Now this week they have made a fresh appeal to the public to help them find the three men behind last month’s savage assault.

The 22- year- old man was rushed to hospital after being stabbed during the early morning attack in a lane near to Cambusnethan Street on Saturday, April 22, at 6am.

The victim was attacked by three men and suffered stab wounds to his left forearm and below his buttocks.

He required stitches to his left forearm during his time at Wishaw General.

An area near the lane was sealed off for almost six hours by police at the time of the offence.

Inspector William Jeffrey, from Motherwell Police Office, this week hopes for more assistance from the public to catch those involved.

He said: “Officers have been checking CCTV and carrying out door to door inquiries in the area.

“The assault took place not far from Cambusnethan Street near houses and a row of shops, so we hope someone will have information.”

DNA from an item of clothing was seized at the scene and officers were looking at possible sightings of the gang on nearby CCTV.

Police are keen to trace three men, who were all wearing dark clothing, in relation to the attack.

The injured man has been released from hospital.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman added: “Members of the public are encouraged to contact police or Crimestoppers if they witness any antisocial behaviour within their communities.”

Anyone with information should contact Wishaw CID on 101, or alternatively telephone Crimestoppers on 0800 555111, where calls are free and anonymity can be maintained.
