Cameron youngest councillor in country

-

SNP’s Cameron McManus has still to pinch himself after he was the youngest councillor to be elected in Scotland last Friday.

The 19-year-old chef, from Cleland, alongside independent councillor Robert McKendrick and Labour’s Louise Roarty and Nicky Shevlin will represent the people in the Murdostoun ward.

The former Coltness High pupil said: “I have stayed in Cleland now for seven years and I just felt that Murdostoun didn’t have a voice.

“I wanted to put myself forward to be the voice that has been missing. It has all still to sink in. The youth voice will definitely be heard.

“I will be trying to improve the schools in Cleland and Coltness and public transport in the area.”

Independent councillor Robert McKendrick was elected with 1765 votes, the second highest first preference votes in North Lanarkshire.

“I have never chapped a door in my life,” he declared.

The hard-working councillor added:“I am always in the Civic every day, early every morning from 7.15. I always get my paper work done and then if someone calls me, I can then go a nd visit them.”

Councillor Nicky Shevlin, a long-standing union official , said constituents have two strong Labour candidates to represent them.

“I would urge them to please come and meet us at our surgeries,“he added.

Louise Roarty, chairman of Cleland Community Council, said: “I will do my very best for everyone, regardless if they voted for me or not.“

The turnout was 46 per cent. There were 6406 ballot papers and 162 rejected ballot papers.

The quota of votes for a candidate to be elected was 1282.
