Relocated in Main Street

Poundland have relocated into the former WHSmith store – four months after the Wishaw Press revealed the move.

Back in Januar y , devastated shoppers found out that the beloved WHSmith Main Street store would close after decades of service to the town.

The Wishaw Press revealed that Poundland would relocate from their unit on the Main Street to the larger site at the former WHSmith shop.

However, Poundland confirmed that they will be taking over at the site with a sign posted on their old premises last week.

The old store closed on Friday, May 6, with the new shop opening the following day.

A spokesman for the company said: “We’re proud to be part of the community in Wishaw and can confirm Poundland will be relocating to the former WHSmiths store where we will continue to offer amazing value.”

WHSmith shut their doors for the last time on Tuesday, March 21 and the closure was described as a devastating blow by politicians and residents alike.

Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson said: “It’s always sad to see household names leave our high street.”

Lifelong Wi s haw resident Terry Mullen said: “I remember when this used to be a thriving town but it just isn’t the case any more.

“You might as well block the street off at the top and the bottom because it’s a disaster.”

Despite the Poundland store filling the vacant unit, after the move the existing store will lie empty.

Last year, the Wishaw Press revealed that 17 per cent of shops on the Main Street were left vacant with 53 of the 301 available units lying empty.
