Isla’s got poetry down to a teacake!
Special treat in store at factory
TUNNOCKS TEA CAKES
First Year pupil Isla Rae returned to school following the Easter Break with exciting news for all of the school community. As part of her English course Isla had written a poem called ‘Address tae a Teacake’ in honour of the culinary delight created by Lanarkshire baker’s Tunnocks. When Isla’s mum read the poem she was so impressed she decided to email it to Tunnocks to let them read it. Within days Tunnocks replied inviting Isla and her mum to the Uddingston factory for a tour and visit.
As part of the visit Isla was taken to meet owner Boyd Tunnock who had another surprise for Isla. Tunnocks were so impressed with Isla’s poem they want to start using it on their bakery bags, printing it alongside the original poem which has been on the bags since 1890. Production of the bags will begin later in the year and they will be in use by the end of the year. What a fantastic achievement, well done Isla. The school are all very proud of her and can’t wait to see her poem in print! TAYLOR TYCOON
This month the school welcome the return of an initiative called “Taylor Tycoon” to Taylor’s First Year ICT course unit on Graphics and Marketing. Pupils are each given initial capital of £1 and are asked to apply their entrepreneurial spark to make as much money as they can from a business idea they develop either as sole traders or in partnership with other pupils. Business ideas range from confectionery, cake, sweets, Indian takeaway, stationery to nail painting and customised jewellery! After creating unique business logos, business plans and marketing materials the extremely enthusiastic young entrepreneurs will launch their enterprises upon an unsuspecting campus, setting up stalls in the theatre with the assistance and support of the department’s staff.
This daily bazaar is expected to create a real buzz and will surely be deemed a resounding success due to the efforts and creativity of all pupils involved. This undoubtedly will prove once again to be a thoroughly rewarding experience for the pupils.
The school will keep you updated with the contest and the final winners. Good luck to each of the First Year teams.
The school also thank Mr. David Lewis, principal teacher of BCT, and to all members of his department for their co-ordination of the activity. CAKE DECORATING
Fifth and sixth year National 5 Cake Craft pupils in Taylor High school have completed their final assignment which was to produce a cake for a specific theme.
The finished cakes were displayed in school for staff and pupils to see and the bakers received a lot of compliments with many being asked if they take orders! PROGRAMME OF STUDY FOR NATIONAL 4 STUDENTS
Students not sitting SQA exams during the next few weeks will embark on a programme of study which involves all subject departments working within the school in addition to a number of trips and visits out of school. The programme is designed to offer tasters of a wide range of courses for the young people concerned. The visits planned by subject departments will also help widen the horizons of all involved. A big thank you goes to Mrs Lorna Brand, DYW champion, who devised the programme. FIFTH AND SIXTH YEAR INDUCTION PROGRAMME
Following the examination period the school’s current fourth year cohort will enjoy the opportunity to participate in the annual fifth year induction programme.
This programme helps students make the most of their fifth year and to be properly prepared to seek a place in college, university or place of work on leaving school. It includes visits to various universities and further education establishments.
Many thanks go to Mrs Joanne McGuigan and depute head teacher Ms. Jan McCrone who are currently co-ordinating the initiative. There is much for our students to look forward to as they face the challenges ahead! DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
