Week-day service The week-day 10.30am service held at St John’s Church on Thursday of last week was conducted by Mrs Joe Bradley, who gave an interestin­g address. This is always a popular and relaxing service, followed with tea and coffee served at “kettle’s on” event in the church hall afterwards. Christian Aid week The Christian Aid week starts in the town with a joint service being held in St John’s church on Sunday of this week at 7pm. The Christian Aid cafe opens in the church hall with St Athanasius Parish on duty at 10am on Monday, May 15. There will lots of snacks, lunches, coffees, and teas as well as a warm welcome for all. The cafe will be manned by Kirkton church on Tuesday, May 16, and will be closed on Wednesday, May 17. It opens again on Thursday, May 18, when it will be manned by St Andrew’s church. (Please note that the weekly Thursday morning church service will be held in St John’s church as usual at 10.30am that morning). On Friday, May 19, St Johns church members will take over the cafe and on the final day of Saturday, May 20, it will be manned by the United Reform church. To complete the week there will be a joint service in St John’s church at 10.30am. A bus will then leave from the church for those who are attending this year’s “Heart and Soul” event in Edinburgh. Braidwood Primary School are holding their annual fun day in the community wing of the school on Saturday, May 20, opening at 11am until 2pm. All welcome. Day centre The weekly prize bingo and games afternoon on Thursday of last week were off, but all activities are back to normal this week with whist and dominoes on Thursday at 12.30pm and dancing on Friday afternoon. A May day luncheon will be held in the Masonic Hall on Tuesday, May 16, and the following Tuesday, May 23, members will be going on their trip to Ayr followed by high tea in Prestwick, before their return trip home. Gala day Final preparatio­ns are underway for the big day on Saturday, June 10, with programmes on sale in the town’s shops soon. Anyone who has still to return any presentati­on cups or trophies are asked to hand these in asap. Trekkers The next event will leave St John’s church at 9am on Saturday, May 20, en route to Loch Humphrey and the Kilpatrick Hills, a seven-mile walk. For more informatio­n, email raewarnock@aol.com. New trekkers welcome. Jar of Grace appeal The 2016/17 appeal raised a final total of £1936.10 with £600 of this raised through gift aid. The actual sum donated to the Unicef charity from the town’s churches is expected to reach over £2000, and everyone who donated was thanked by the charity for their generosity. Girls’ and Boys’ Brigade awards The Girls’ Brigade and Boys’ Brigade companies will hold their awards ceremony at Kirkton Church on Sunday of this week after the morning service at 11am. St Athanasius Parish Members of the parish will be on duty on the first day of the Christian Aid cafe at 10am in St John’s Church hall on Sunday. Congratula­tions were given to parishione­r Andrew McGregor, who won the South Lanarkshir­e sports champion of the year award and to Lucy Graham, who came first in the Robert Burns poetry competitio­n at S1-2 level. Thank are also given to all those who contribute­d to the recent SCIAF “wee boxes” collection, which Carluke Primrose Orchestral Flutes are delighted to announce that their new conductor and musical director will be Jon Hargreaves.

Jon has a wealth of experience, and the orchestra are looking forward to working with him.

He has a doctorate,Music as Communicat­ion, from the University of York, and teaches for the Aldeburgh Young Musicians Scheme, having previously worked as an associate lecturer at the University of Kent.

Jon’s first engagement with the orchestra will be the annual concert in June.

More details regarding this concert will be made available soon.

CPOF wish Jon all the very best in his new role and hope that his stay at Carluke is a long and successful one.

The orchestra would also like to extend their thanks to Alex Abbott, who has filled the role on an interim basis since John Bryce retired from the role last summer.
