‘Well all set for survival battle

May 20, 2017 – the date may seem like nothing to most people but Motherwell fans will probably have cleared their schedules already.

Motherwell travel to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the final game of the Premiership campaign and it looks set to be a belter.

The last day will most likely be a nervous affair for three clubs – two of them who will be going head to head at the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium.

Inverness have looked dead and buried for the past month but they gave themselves a slim chance of staying up with a win over Hamilton Accies last Saturday.

Motherwell’s failure to take anything from their game with Ross County leaves them in a perilous position as well.

So right now it looks like we could be heading towards a last-day shoot-out between the Steelmen, Accies and Caley Jags.

Thistle sit four points adrift at the bottom of the table and although they have a mountain to climb, this weekend’s Lanarkshire derby helps Richie Foran’s side.

Worst-case scenario is they will be five points behind, if Hamilton and Motherwell draw.

Inverness have only managed five wins all season and they’ll need to go unbeaten in their final three games to stand a chance of staying up.

One win and two draws would still only get them a spot in the play-offs and I think they have left it too late in the day.

But the most alarming thing could be that Inverness need a win to do so and on the last day you never want to play the side with nothing to lose.

Motherwell must beat Hamilton on Saturday to avoid this scenario. A win over Accies would open up a three-point gap on Martin Canning’s men and possibly a sevenpoint gap on Inverness.

This would erase any fears of automatic relegation for Stephen Robinson’s side and the focus can be switched to bettering Accies’results.

With a home game against Kilmarnock – who have nothing left to play for this season – sandwiched between the Accies and Caley Thistle game, the Steelmen can make the last day a little less stressful.

But as any Motherwell fan who has been at Fir Park this season will know, stress is almost a buzzword when watching the Steelmen. Dodgy
