‘They’re our angels’ as Jim, 60, suffers seizure Partner Yvonne thanks his good samaritans

- Ross Thomson

A woman has described the good samaritans who rushed to her partner’s aid after he collapsed in Wishaw’s Tesco store as ‘her angels’.

Yvonne Gallacher was out shopping with her partner of 10 years Jim Lannigan on Friday afternoon at the store in Belhaven Road when Jim suddenly collapsed with a suspected seizure.

But, thanks to the quick thinking of two Tesco managers and three members of the public, Jim was revived before being rushed to Wishaw General Hospital.

Yvonne, 52, said: “We were arguing about what we were going to have for dinner and then Jim just collapsed.

“It’s the first time something like this has ever happened and I was panic-stricken.

“But then these angels came to help us. They were amazing.

“They couldn’t do enough for us. They put him in the recovery position and the staff from Tesco brought pillows down to make sure he was comfortable until the ambulance arrived.”

Keen runner Jim was released from hospital on Saturday having been unable to get a brain scan due to the cyber attack which hit all NHS Lanarkshire hospitals on Friday.

Now back recovering at his home in Wishaw, 60-year-old Jim said: “It came right out of the blue.

“I just remember waking up lying on the floor of Tesco.

“I think I was out for about 20 minutes or half an hour.

“After that I was taken away to Wishaw General Hospital.

“I like going out running to keep myself fit and I feel fine now.

“Hopefully I will be back out running before too long.

“I’m just glad it’s all over. It was frightening for everyone except me as I hadn’t a clue what was going on!”

Due to the understandable stress at the time, Yvonne was not able to remember the names of the people who rushed to save Jim’s life.

However, she hopes to be able to thank them over the next few weeks.

She added: “The people gave me their names but through the panic I can’t remember who they were.

“I know one was a theatre nurse, another person was a staff nurse and I think the other lady was an off duty member of Tesco.

“I went into Tesco on Saturday to thank the manager. They were amazing.

“I think one of the girls was called Rachel. I want to thank them and say that I am eternally grateful for all you all did for both of us.

“I don’t know what the outcome would have been without you all.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “A customer collapsed in the store on Friday and two members of staff – one of whom is a first aider – assisted, with help from three members of the public. Helping our customers is paramount and we all hope that Jim is recovering well.” Are you one of the members of the public who rushed to the aid of Jim?
