Cllr Fiona signs up to our Care Home Pledge

£3m care unit an‘essential facility’

- Gary Fanning

A SNP councillor this week backed the Wishaw Press’s campaign for a new care home in the town.

And newly- elected Wishaw councillor Fiona Fortheringham signed our petition to build a new intermediate £3million care home for sick people in Wishaw.

We wanted both Labour and the SNP to pledge that whoever won the council election that they would implement plans to build a facility for residents with life-changing injuries such as strokes in the Wishaw area.

In the run-up to the election, both Labour leader Jim Logue and David Stocks, the SNP Group Leader, united to sign our petition.

Fiona said: “I was delighted to sign the Care Home Pledge.

“This is already a top priority for the SNP Group and for local communities.

“It is essential that all groups work together to deliver this essential facility.”

Fiona is the office manager for Marion Fellows who last week signed our petition.

Mrs Fellows, SNP candidate for Motherwell and Wishaw, pledged: “If re-elected as the MP for Motherwell and Wishaw, I promise to use my experience as a former councillor and MP for the area to influence the council and NHS Lanarkshire to build this facility.”

Central Wishaw Community Council are campaigning for the new facility after they called for a public inquiry into why at least 31 patients died at Wishaw General Hospital while waiting to be discharged.

They want answers on whether some of the patients’ deaths could have been avoided if Belhaven Care home hadn’t closed or if a replacement facility had been built.

If you would like to support the campaign, you can fill in the coupon, and send it to us at the Wishaw Press.
