Newhouse travellers prompt site concerns

Residents worried

- Michael Temlett

Residents have raised concerns over travellers who have arrived in Newhouse.

Two caravans have appeared across the road from Peggy White’s on Edinburgh Road, two weeks after a similar incident in Ravenscraig.

Scottish Water threatened legal action against two caravans who set up on one of their sites near the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility and left rubbish lying around.

Now North Lanarkshire Council have announced that they are investigating who owns the land where the caravans have stopped and will seek to take action.

Residents took to our Facebook page to voice their concerns on the mess being left behind by the travellers.

Mo Li Tor said: “Don’t get it why they can’t bring their rubbish to the skip. Two mountains of bin bags piling up! Surely nobody would be bothered if they keep it at least clean?”

Douglas Gilchrist added: “Has anyone seen the mess opposite the garage in the car park at Newhouse roundabout?

“They’re still there and there’s only two vans - it’s like a tip.”

However, Stacey Young said: “The council should be allowing more open field grounds to be used for the travelling community and they wouldn’t have to park up anywhere there was an opportunity.”

The council confirmed that they are looking into the matter and will take action on the owners of the caravans if they own the land.

A council spokesman said: “We are aware of a small number of travellers and vehicles at this location.

“We are working to establish land ownership and once this is clear will take any necessary action.”
