MSP Neil steps in on dumping ground row
Letter on litter road
An MSP has called on council bosses to tackle flytipping on a road that has been branded the“dumping ground of Lanarkshire”.
Shotts MSP Alex Neil has written to the local authority’s chief executive Paul Jukes on behalf of his constituent John Williamson about his concerns and also to address pothole issues .
In February, the Wishaw Press reported how Mr Williamson believes the roads running from Allanton to Newmains are “disgraceful” due to piles of rubbish lying by the roadside.
He has hit out at rubbish dumped near Allanton Road on the A71 towards Shotts.
The council vowed to resolve the issue but Mr Williamson claims little has been done about it.
In the letter to Mr Jukes, Mr Neil said: “Mr Williamson advised that the council said there were funding issues. With this in mind, can I suggest that the council considers using Restorative Justice teams?
“I would be grateful if you would investigate this matter and address the specific issues raised.”
A council spokesman said the local authority has invested £180,000 on the road mentioned.
He added: “This is in addition to pothole and safety defect repairs carried out as part of routine safety inspections undertaken.
“Mr Neil’s suggestion of engaging Restorative Justice teams would not be appropriate for carriageway works as this is undertaken by contractors with suitably skilled operatives.
“The council carries out regular litter patrols on rural roads.
“Staff who carry out this work are trained to work safely alongside high speed, rural roads so it would not be appropriate to use the Restorative Justice service.”
