Moult worth his weight in goals

-

Forget about being worth your weight in gold, Louis Moult is proving his worth in goals.

The Motherwell striker has scored 18 goals after his awkward looking header against Hamilton on Saturday.

It was Moult’s worst goal but probably his most memorable as he took his tally to six against Accies this season.

When everyone looks back on the final table this Sunday, how important will those goals be?

I imagine they will be the difference between safety and play-offs.

A late equaliser against Martin Canning’s men at Hogmanay, four goals in a 4-2 thriller back in September and Saturday’s matchwinner.

Seven points thanks to the 25-year-old who I’m sure celebrated his birthday in style on Sunday.

Moult has scored 36 times in 66 appearances for Motherwell.

So the hardest equation for the Steelmen in the summer will be to work out how much those goals mean to them.

All of a sudden being worth your weight in gold comes into the equation.

How much gold do you ask for the man who has saved your skin this year and fired you into the top half last season?

What is the going rate for a player who is being tipped to join a couple of clubs?

Well, you can guarantee Motherwell’s mettle will be tested.

Rangers were one of the first clubs linked with the striker and remain bookmakers favourite to sign the fans’favourite.

However, with Championship side Derby County also sniffing around the hitman you can understand why it’s hard to find the right price.

Moult has a year left on his contract and already Motherwell have knocked back bids for the former Stoke City player.

On deadline day back in January, Fir Park chiefs knocked back a bid from CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria and a unnamed League One side in England.

It was a move which made complete sense and the goals scored by Moult in the second half of the season justify that decision.

But with the whole summer ahead, you can bet the phone will hardly stop ringing for clubs lining up for Moult.

With a year left on the contract, the fee may also be lower unless Motherwell really want to make a

statement of intent and see how high clubs will go.

The conundrum faced is whether it is worth knocking back bids for one more year of Moult and letting him leave for free this time next year.

Will his goals be replaced and if not, does that mean a relegation battle again next year?

It’s a headache for everyone at Fir Park and one I sure wouldn’t like to be a part of.

With talk also surrounding Ben Heneghan’s departure from the club, it could be a big summer for Motherwell and a rebuilding job for manager Stephen Robinson which will shape next season – for better or for worse.
