Prize bingo The members and friends of Lodge St John 187 packed into the Masonic Hall on Tuesday of last week to enjoy another great evening of prize bingo. The lodge’s Worshipful Master Philip Smith gave sincere thanks to all for their kind donations of prizes, and expressed his thanks to all those who had helped in the evening’s preparatio­n. A total of £1100 was raised from the event, which will go towards benefiting the senior members of the lodge. Members are reminded that a cash bingo event is held in the Masonic Hall every Monday evening with an opportunit­y to meet up with friends and enjoy a few games of bingo and refreshmen­ts, for eyes down at 7.30pm. Winners of the draw for the month of April were as follows: T Findlay, Caneluk Avenue £120; C Warren, Market Place £100, and C Hollywood, Braidwood £50. Week-day service St John’s Church was a very busy venue on Thursday morning of last week, which saw the welcome return of Mr Alan Grant who conducted the short service on this occasion. His message “God is always with us” was enjoyed by members of the congregati­on and was followed with a rendition of two of their favourite hymns to make this a joyful morning. Those attending then moved through to the Christian Aid cafe which was being manned in the church hall by members of St Andrews Church. Everyone is invited to come along to this service which is held in the church each Thursday morning at 10.30am. Day Centre It was ceilidh time for members of the Carluke Day Centre at their lunch held on Tuesday of last week. After a steak pie lunch served by Jennifer and her staff, the company danced away to the music of the Willie Smith Scottish Dance Band. This was followed with the usual raffle to complete an afternoon of fun and frolicks with all looking forward to their next jubilee lunch on Tuesday, June 27. Names for this event should be submitted as soon as possible. This week the members travelled to the Ayrshire coast for their first outing of the session, which was followed with high tea at the Carlton Hotel in Prestwick. The winners of the Thursday games afternoon were as follows: whist - R Angus and B Muir, J McIntyre, and J Tonnar; and dominoes - J Burnleigh and D Boyd, J Scobie, and E Robson. Annual meeting The ‘Let’s Get Together’ annual stated meeting will take place in St John’s Church hall on Friday, June 2 at 7.30pm. Everyone is invited to come along to hear, see and share in this event. Christian Aid 2017 The first Christian Aid event in the town was held in 1963, and 54 years later five of the Carluke churches still unite to raise funds for the charity. The focus for national fundraisin­g this year was on the plight of refugees, of whom there are estimated to be over 65 million across the globe fleeing their homes due to disasters and wars. The churches responded to this year’s appeal by running the ever popular cafe in St John’s Church over the course of last week. Hundreds of people were served lunches and gave generously to the work of the Christian Aid charity from the proceeds of the cafe, as well as the many
