Well changes are for the best

-

Stephen Robinson did not waste any time after the end of the season.

The final ball of the campaign was kicked and as soon as Craig Thomson blew time on Motherwell’s 3-2 defeat to Inverness the Steelmen boss was already planning his next moves.

In all honesty, after survival was secured last Tuesday against Kilmarnock, Robinson had probably worked out who would be leaving Fir Park this summer.

On Monday afternoon, 11 players were told their Motherwell career was over as Robinson starts to build for next year.

The importance of who is brought in to a football club is always stressed but sometimes players have to make way for positive changes.

It can almost be as vital looking at who is heading out the door.

Players like Scott McDonald, Stephen Pearson and Craig Samson bring with them a wealth of experience which should never be underestimated – both on and off the park.

All three players contributed greatly throughout the season but Robinson will believe it’s time to take a fresh approach and it will be welcomed by the majority of fans.

The mix of young and old has served the Steelmen well over the years but a common complaint from the stands has been over the senior players.

Some of the criticism has been harsh but it’s clear to see with talents like Chris Cadden, Allan Campbell and Jack McMillan waiting in the wings that replacements can be found from the academy.

That’s why it was quite surprising to see under 20’s players Dylan Mackin, Tom Fry and Jordan Pettigrew released by the club.

All three youngsters never really had a chance at the top level which is surprising as Motherwell are always keen to give youth a chance.

But what is also interesting from Motherwell’s statement is that they are looking to work out deals with Lionel Ainsworth, Russell Griffiths and Keith Lasley.

Lasley’s love for the club shines through in our back page story this week and it’s clear he would make the difference whether it’s in a coaching capacity or on the park.

Having dressing room leaders is important especially when the new faces are set to come in.

The mix of young and old has worked well
