Houldswort­h building could be structural risk

Fears it could have same problems as Edinburgh schools

The multi-million pound Houldswort­h Centre in Wishaw has been named amongst the 51 health buildings across Scotland which may be structural­ly “at risk”.

It’s feared that the £23 million centre on Kenilworth Avenue, which opened last year, may have similar faults to the ones found at 17 primaries and secondarie­s across Edinburgh.

A recent investigat­ion carried out by Clyde 1 News discovered Scotland’s health boards are now having to carry out repairs in order to make a number of their buildings safe.

The other buildings which may be affected across Lanarkshir­e are Hairmyres Hospital, Bellshill Community Health Clinic, Kilsyth Community Health Centre and Hunter Community Health Centre in East Kilbride.

John Paterson, Director of Property and Support Services, said: “The Scottish Futures Trust issued guidance which identified that if buildings met certain criteria relating to age and constructi­on- type, then additional checks would need to be undertaken to ensure there are no defects.

“NHS Lanarkshir­e identified five properties which met this criteria. As a result, intrusive sampling surveys have now been completed and the results are currently being assessed in conjunctio­n with technical consultant­s.

“While some issues for potential improvemen­t were noted, none are thought to be serious. Any appropriat­e remedial works to NHS Lanarkshir­e properties which the consultant­s recommend will
