Inquiry as OAP dies in bike fall

- Ross Thomson

Mystery surrounds how a 71-year-old man died after falling off his bike.

Tragedy struck when the OAP fell of his bicycle while travelling along Main Street, Overtown, last Wednesday about 9.20am.

Emergency services were called and the victim, William Currie, was taken to Wishaw General Hospital before being transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where he was pronounced dead in the early hours of Thursday.

Overtown councillor Jim Hume described the death of the cyclist as a tragic accident

Neighbours told of their shock at the incident.

Ken Struthers said he had written to councillors urging them to install speed cameras

on the road.

The 73-year-old, who has lived in Main Street for 40 years, said:“I saw a white car next to him along with a few other people. I went up to the top of the hill at Main Street and tried to slow the traffic down for about 15 minutes.

“The ambulance came and took the cyclist away. I saw his legs moving so I thought he would be okay.

“When you are crossing the road at eight in the morning you are taking your life in your hands.

“I sent a letter to councillor Jim Hume a couple of weeks ago and I spoke to John Pentland when he was the councillor.

“John Pentland told me it would cost £80,000 to install speed cameras. I told him it would pay for itself.

“It’s not about the volume of the traffic, it’s the speed cars and lorries are travelling at.”

Councillor Jim Hume said:“Clearly you can’t put speed bumps on a main trunk road and it is the police who decide if speed cameras are to be installed.”

The Wishaw Press understands no vehicle was involved in the incident.

Police are keen to speak to the woman driver of a Fiat 500 who stopped to help the man.

Anyone with information can contact police on 101.
