Large rats thriving on rubbish build-up

- Gary Fanning

Residents this week told of their shock at Wishaw’s‘hidden shame’.

Neighbours in the town centre have been calling for action to tackle the flytipping after large rats have been seen roaming about the wasteground behind the former Crown Hotel in the Main Street.

Flat owner Kevin McKay, speaking on behalf of half a dozen properties beside the skip that has been left abandoned, said the rubbish there is attracting vermin.

He said that the firm who dumped the skip have gone into liquidation.

“The mess is a disgrace,”he said. “I have been on to environmental health because there are rats running about.

“I have been trying to get something done about this but there has been no help from anyone. How is a truck going to take the skip away because there is no access to the land because of the bollards that have been put up.”

Margaret Courtney, of Pather, said she was shocked to read about the state of the backcourts in last week’s Wishaw Press. And she said the council should transform the area behind the Clydesdale Bank into a carpark.

“This would help the problem,” she added.

“People could use a pay machine to park in the centre of the town.

“If there was a car park there people would not be able to flytip.”

The Wishaw Press was given a tour of some of the rundown hotspots in the centre of Wishaw by Alan Love, secretary of Central Wishaw Community Council.

Mr Love said:“I am glad the issue has been highlighted in the Wishaw Press so that something at last can be done.

“Everyone in Wishaw is talking about it. Many people who lived in Wishaw never knew anything about it. And did the local councillors know about it?

“If they did, why didn’t they do anything about it?”
