What matters to the Wishaw Press readers

-

With residents set to head to the polls tomorrow (Thursday), the people of Wishaw are still mulling over who they should vote for when it comes to the important issues.

We took to the streets to ask residents what mattered most to them at both a national and a local level.

Patricia Burns believes the most important thing heading into this General Election is that the older generation acknowledge their past mistakes and look to improve the country.

She said:“I think there is a whole generation who owe an apology to the younger ones for the mess we’ve made of the country.

“It goes back as far as going into Europe and now all that money has been wasted for us to then try and leave it.

“The economy is in such a terrible state now because of past politicians making poor decisions and now the youngsters have to pay the price for it and it’s not fair.”

Douglas Hamilton, 57, also believes Brexit is the biggest issue coming out of this election and hopes it can be sorted sooner rather than later.

He said:“I think Brexit will help us get back on track as a country because we’ve had so many problems with fishermen and farmers when it comes to the European laws.

“We should be doing more to support the local trades and not be getting orders on how to run our country from outside of the UK.

“I think that will be the first step to improving the economy.”

At a local level, James Owen highlighted the importance of traffic wardens in Wishaw.

He believes that the police resources are too stretched at the moment but more should be done to enforce the‘hazardous’ parking situation.

He said:“As a motorist I think the biggest problem is the parking in the centre of Wishaw.

“Cars are just being abandoned everywhere and the drivers know they can get away with it because there’s no wardens and the police don’t care about it.

“I think the police should obviously be spending their time tackling crime and they need as much help as they possibly can get.

“At a national level we definitely need to be helping out all the trade workers we have and giving youngsters more of an opportunity.”

Wishaw resident Vicky Penman admits she has switched off due to the amount of election chat recently.

She said:“It’s the same story as always and every time you get so many false promises.

“I haven’t thought too much about who I’m voting for and to be honest I haven’t looked at a lot of the stuff which has been put out about the election.”
