of 11,898. It was a historic night for the SNP as they scooped 56 out of the 59 seats across Scotland in the 2015 election.

It was the first time the constituency of Motherwell and Wishaw had been without a Labour MP since 1945, showing the changing of the tide in local and national politics.

Marion Fellows claimed 27,275 votes whilst Frank Roy won 15,377.

They finished ahead of Conservatives Meghan Gallacher who was third with 3695 votes and Neil Wilson from UKIP with 1289.

Wilson and Gallacher will return for this year’s election as Fellows looks to regain her seat with Angela Feeney the Labour candidate.

With the lingering debates over Brexit and a second independence referendum, voters will be looking closer to home for issues which matter to them.

The state of the Main Street in Wishaw has long been a hot topic, with a special Wishaw Press investigation last year revealing that 17 per cent of shops on the Main Street were left vacant, with 53 of the 301 available units lying empty.

After the loss of WHSmith was announced by the newspaper back in January, it was another devastating blow to a Main Street which residents believe is in dire need of a makeover.

The controversial Streetscape scheme was completed last summer after five years of disruption to the Main Street in an attempt to give the area a facelift.

Last week’s exclusive also highlighted the problems of Wishaw’s ‘ hidden shame’ with drinking and drugs dens uncovered next to the Main Street.

Parking in the area has also been highlighted by many and pressure will be piled on to politicians and councillors to help alleviate the problem of illegally parked cars on the Main Street.

Investment in the NHS is always debated during election time and with Wishaw General Hospital’s poor accident and emergency waiting time record, residents will be keen to see what parties can do to help the devolved issue.

Tomorrow, all of the debates heard since Prime Minister Theresa May called the General Election on April 18, will boil down to every voter putting a cross in the box for who they feel will do the best job for them – locally and nationally.
