Sco t t i s h t ra d i t i o n a l events competitio­ns involving dancers, pipe bands, athletes, and schools, provided great entertainm­ent for 2500 spectators at the 68th Shotts Highland Games at Hannah Park on Saturday.

The day began with the Chieftain’s Parade led by Chieftain Ronnie Miles, managing director of Bells Food Group, with former Chieftains Charles Cefferty, Tom Hyslop, Jim Robertson, councillor Jim Logue, George Scott, Robert Williams, Gavin Whitefield, and John Bell.

The bands on parade were Coalburn, Glasgow City Band and Bothwell Castle Pipe Band.

Over 160 Highland Dancers in five different age groups performed the Highland fling, the sword dance, Shean Trubhis, and Strathspey reel.

Convener Lynne Hamilton started the event early in the morning to ensure the dancing programme was completed.

There were around 40 pipe band performanc­es for the various grades which provided great entertainm­ent with Glasgow Skye Associatio­n taking the top place and leading the Chieftain’s final march in the town at the end of the Games.

Primary pupils from Stane, Dykehead, Newmains, St Patrick’s, Kirk O’Shotts, and St Bernadette’s Primaries competed for the honour of their schools in sporting events including individual and relay races, wellie throwing and haggis passing, rounded off with a tug-of-war which included an adult in each team. Results were: Boys – 1. St Patrick’s taking the Wallace Trophy; 2. Stane; 3. Dykehead.
