Kind-hearted staff make grand gesture Council team raise funds in memory of tragic Eilidh

- Staff reporter

Kind- hearted council staff have donated a magnificent £ 1000 to the Beatson charity in memory of tragic trainee pharmacist Eilidh McHugh.

The 22-year-old was nearing the end of her pre-registration year to become a pharmacist in Overtown when she died suddenly on Tuesday, March 7, following a short illness.

Her death devastated her dad Michael, mum Elaine, 26-year-old sister, Kerry and her close group of pals.

The former Dux at Holy Cross High School, Hamilton, had been working at Overtown Pharmacy having obtained a first class honours degree in pharmacy at the University of Strathclyde.

And the donation to the Beatson – who raise money to offer better treatment, medical equipment and support for those with cancer and to help prevent it in the future, – was made by North Lanarkshire Council’s housing services team, where Eilidh’s mum Elaine works as housing head of service.

Alzheimer Scotland and St Andrew’s Hospice also received donations from the staff at Bellshill and Viewpark housing offices and at Motherwell’s Civic Centre.

And Alzheimer Scotland help people living with dementia and offer personalised support services to individuals and their families.

St Andrew’s Hospice provide care to people with life-limiting illness, with their fundraising department having to raise £ 65,000 each week in order to continue providing this vital service.

The staff raised the money through coffee mornings, home baking, dress down days, lunches and guessing the baby competitions.

Des Murray, assistant chief executive with North Lanarkshire Council said: “These charities are all in desperate need of additional funding and our teams were delighted to raise money to help look after those in need.

“Everyone knows someone who has needed help from these wonderful organisations and I would like to say a huge well done to all our staff who have helped raise such fantastic sums of money to support the charities.”
