Breathing new life in to library they saved
Since helping to save their library from closure, a small band of Newarthill bookworms have brought life back to the library which was so close to being axed.
After North Lanarkshire Council confirmed in December that Newarthill Library would remain open after a sustained campaign by locals, the group which did so much to help save the building decided the campaign wasn’t over but had only just begun. The group, now known as Supporters of Newarthill Library, have organised a number of events since the start of 2017 including a Spring Spectacular and author events – the latest of which was with kids author BB Taylor.
BB has written 11 books for children and read from some of them on the day.
The hands down favourite was her most recent publication, Murphy and The Monsters.
Yoshi the Yeti, who features in the book, also came along to pay the children a special visit.
Supporters of Newarthill Library chair Angie Walker said: “It was a joy and privilege to host this author event. We would like to thank everyone who came along to support the event, and especially BB Taylor who travelled all the way from Birmingham just to see us, having learned of our group through the campaign which saved our library from closure last year.
“The children were so engaged and well-behaved.
“We are hearing from parents that they returned home very excited and enjoyed the experience.
“It’s so important for us to nurture the dreams and aspirations of our local children and BB Taylor certainly helped us to do that.
“We plan to host similar events, catering to a wide variety of age groups and areas of interest, throughout the year.
