Two talented youngsters are targeting gold in the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Wishaw’s Ryan Quigley and Craigneuk’s Taylor Hamilton have been named in Team Scotland’s 41-strong squad heading to the Bahamas next month. The Commonwealth Youth Games is the first step on the way to the senior games and features nine sports across five days of competition. Sixteen-year-old Ryan, of Lilac Grove, will compete in Scotland’s judo team, while Shire ABC’s Taylor will be boxing for his country. Ryan was thrilled with his call-up and is wanting to come home with a prize around his neck. The St Aidan’s High pupil said: “Every competition I go to I want to come away with a medal, so hopefully I can go out there and do it. “It’s an achievement just to be named in the team and I’m delighted with it. “Last year was my first year in the Cadets category and I found it tougher against stronger opponents, but this year I’ve had a good year and I finished third in the British Identification List. “I want to compete in full-time judo at some point, so this is a good place to start.” Craigneuk’s Taylor is no stranger to success, having won gold at multi-nation European tournaments in the past. Shire ABC head coach Jack Parvin added: “It’s a great achievement for Taylor and he deserves it. He’s a cracking lad who works hard.” Forgewood ABC in Motherwell will also have a representative in the Bahamas in Lewis Johnstone from Airdrie, who now lives in Airdrie.
