Bus hero saved brave Andy’s life

Dog walker given four minutes to live

- Lynn Love

A man was told he only had minutes to live when he was rescued by paramedics after he was hit by a van in a horror accident.

Andrew White suffered horrendous injuries causing him to lose his right leg when he was hit by the vehicle

The 26-year-old, known as Andy, was out walking his beloved dog Buster when the traumatic events unfolded.

The one- year- old chocolate Labrador ran away from his owner and Andy was forced to cross over the busy road to rescue him.

On their way back across a van mowed down the pair and ran over Andy’s legs.

Passers-by and a bus driver rushed to Andy’s aid whilst they waited for the emergency services to arrive.

His fiancée Angela Strange told the Wishaw Press he would not be alive if it wasn’t for the quick-thinking actions of bus driver Graham McPherson.

She said: “Andy is lucky to be alive and he has Graham to thank for that.

“His leg was hanging on by a bit of skin and he was losing so much blood.

“When Graham saw what was happening he ran over to help Andy.

“He took his belt off and strapped it very tight around his leg to try and stop the bleeding. We have since found out he is an ex-Army man so he knew what he was doing.

“The paramedics told us this is the reason Andy is still alive today.

“We are so grateful as things could have been very different.”

When the paramedics arrived on the scene in Harthill’s Edinburgh Road on June 22 at 2pm they found Andy lying on the road in a pool of blood.

They made the difficult decision to give Andy a blood transfusion at the roadside before they moved him to hospital as they believed he only had around four minutes to live.

After the treatment he was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

Medics were unable to save his right leg and he was forced to have it amputated the following day.

Angela said Asda worker Andy is now in a stable condition and has been undergoing physiotherapy for the last week.

She added: “He’s doing great now and has a very positive outlook on the future. He’s an inspiration to all of us. The way he has handled what has happened to him has been amazing. His life changed in a flash yet he is still so happy.

“Of course things are going to be very different and we are all going to have to adapt to lots of changes but we have no other choice. We just feel so lucky to still have Andy with us today.”

Andy’s family put out an appeal on social media to try and track down bus driver Graham as they were desperate to thank him for what he had done.

In under 24 hours he had been found and asked if he could visit Andy in hospital. The family and Andy were delighted to see him.

Angela added: “It was great to meet the man responsible for saving Andy’s life. He’s our hero. Nothing we can ever say or do will be enough to thank him.

“We’d also like to thank everyone for their well-wishes over the last few week and to those who have made a generous donation to a Go Fund Me Page set up by my sister.
