119 new homes at flytipping site

Community welcome houses proposal

- Michael Temlett

Plans to build 119 houses in Craigneuk have been welcomed by residents.

The proposal was submitted to North Lanarkshire Council last week with those in Craigneuk giving their backing to the plans following consultation with residents.

Property giants Keepmoat Homes filed an application for the ‘ residential development of 119 dwellinghouses including associated roads, drainage and open space at Meadowhead Road, Craigneuk.

The Meadowhead Road site was criticised by one resident last month after he told the Wishaw Press the site was being used by flytippers.

Complaints were raised by the man, who did not want to be named for fear of repercussions, that the site was a tip and he was calling on the police to act at the old Ravenscraig site through the gates at Meadowhead Road.

But now it seems like 119 houses will be built on the site if proposals are accepted and the residents who attended the consultation were pleased with the decision.

In a document released by Keepmoat Homes showing all letters of consultation, Craigneuk Community Council secretary Margaret Ann Murray gave her support and said: “The land is derelict and is better to be used.”

Resident Claire McCann added: “The layout and design is spacious and modern with varied types of housing.

“It’s well laid out to meet needs of varied housing such as single parents, couples, elderly etc.”

Louise Grant said: “Definitely needed as this piece of land has sat empty for over 10 years. It would make the street look less untidy and stop people dumping their rubbish.”

Nathan Wilson, councillor for Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig, said: “As the Scottish Conservative councillor for Ravenscraig, I am very keen to see the site of the former steelworks redeveloped.

“Alongside the Regional Sports Facility, the Motherwell campus of New College Lanarkshire, the housing estate at the top of Ravenscraig, the Raven’s Cliff pub and other mooted endeavours, the proposal to build 119 homes on the vacant land besides Meadowhead Road in Craigneuk could make an important contribution to achieving this.

“The written responses to the pre- application consultation for this house building programme were generally positive with a number of participants noting that the derelict land should be put to use. However, it is critical that the Keepmoat Homes proposal has the support of the Craigneuk community and that concerns raised in the pre-application process are properly addressed.

“The potential added pressure on school placements must also be given full consideration.

“Whilst there are strong merits to the proposal, it is important that it moves forward with the consent of Craigneuk residents and the highly regarded
