Main St closure to cause hassle

- Michael Temlett

Drivers in Overtown will be faced with longer journeys when the Main Street closes next week.

Between Monday, July 24, and Friday, July 28, the Main Street which merges into Overtown Road will be shut for resurfacing works with a diversion in place which is likely to cause hassle.

The works could be the first in a long line of problems for motorists after the Wishaw Press revealed last month a £1.5 million project was scheduled for Horsley Brae.

The council intend to build a filter lane on the A71 junction at Horsley Brae to ease congestion.

In the past residents have said the road can be backed up all the way from Lanark Road turn-off to Garrion Bridge.

However, doubts were raised over the effectiveness of the proposals by Overtown and Waterloo Community Council.

As part of the Main Street works, motorists who are approaching Overtown Road from the north-east side of the closure will be directed along Wishaw Road, then the A73 towards Wildman Road, Station Road, Brownlee Road and the Horsley Brae before then being brought up to the south side of the closure.

Vehicles approaching from the south side will be sent the opposite way with diversion signs posted.

Bus services are also expected to be affected by the road closure.

A spokesman from Nor th Lanarkshire Council said: “Further to a request from Amey Public Services LLP I can confirm the road shall be closed by way of closure notice commencing at Monday, July 24 and terminating on Friday , July 28.

“This closure is required to facilitate carriageway resurfacing works.”
