Loving couple celebrate 60 years of marriage
A couple marked their diamond wedding anniversary last week.
Margaret and Wi l l i e McCafferty were sent a congratulatory letter from the Queen as they marked their anniversary on July 12.
The couple got married on July 12, 1957, in Bonkle Church, by Reverend Hill and they marked the milestone with family and friends at the Bonkle Church Hall with a tea party last Saturday.
Willie, who is 84, and 78-year-old Margaret met at a BB dance in Allanton and went on to have four kids – Billy, Robert, Pauline and Maurice.
The duo, of Allanton, have seven grandchildren – Stephanie, Gillian, Linsey, Grant , Corey, Victor ia and Olivia as well as great grandchildren Aaron, Olivia and Derryn.
When asked the secret to their success, Margaret joked: “You have to be able to shut your ears sometimes!
“I was asked if I was going to renew my vows but I said no chance. I said them once 60 years ago and I’ve been stuck ever since!”
Willie, who was born in Morningside, moved to Allanton when he was three.
The family emigrated to Australia where he did National Service in the Australian Military Forces.
When he returned to Scotland he met his wife Margaret, from Newmains.
Willie has worked tirelessly for young people of the village from football to youth clubs and committees as well as being a Wishaw Press correspondent for more than 50 years.
He said: “I’ve taken plenty of pictures for the Wishaw Press over the years so I’m used to seeing my name in it.”
