Men’s breakfast The next monthly breakfast event will takes place in Kirkton Church on Saturday, August 6, with an 8.30am. On this occasion the group’s guest speaker will be Julie Coye. A warm welcome will be given to all those who wish to join in this popular monthly meeting. Week-day church service The service held in St John’s Church on Thursday morning of last week was conducted by Mr Joe Bradley, who gave an address to all those present about the resurrection. This was followed by members of the congregation who joined in the singing of two popular hymns to make it another enjoyable day. Afterwards many gathered for their usual trip to the kettle’s on event held in the church hall with a few new faces also welcomed along. Charity open day An event which was planned to take place on a Fair holiday weekend should be guaranteed a spell of good weather. But sadly, for the past three years, the crowds going along to local woman Betty Kerr’s annual open day have had to battle through the wind and rain. This year’s event opened on Saturday morning of last week at 9.30am until 4pm with Betty welcoming her many friends and neighbours through the doors of her house. People from as far afield as Wishaw, Lanark, Larkhall and Lesmhagow, as well as local families and supporters made their way to enjoy a lovely day, filled with scrumptious cakes and scones served up with tea and coffee. Before they played for prizes on the tombola and raffles and picked up some home baking to take home for tea. Many admired the beautifully knitted children’s items which were on display such as babies’ shawls. And the event proved to be another major triumph for Betty and members of her family with a grand total of £2333 raised on the day, along with the many donations which have still to be added to Saturday’s total. Betty and her daughter Elizabeth have now become well known fundraisers for the Glasgow Beatson Hospital and have already donated thousands of pounds throughout the years since Betty’s husband Jim passed away at the hospital. The family, once again, extend their sincere thanks to all who assisted in the event’s success and to her many friends who continue to give her their help and encouragement. There were many winners in the raffle with the main prize of a Nescafe Krups coffee machine being won by local woman Mrs Isa Lindsay. Congratulations are given to Isa and all those who won prizes at this year’s event with all now already looking forward to next year. Day centre Members of Carluke Day Centre for the elderly enjoyed another week of fun-filled activities with the winners of the games afternoon on Thursday of last week as follows: whist was won by B Wright, with runners-up of B Muir and M Mitchell, and dominoes was won by T Scobie with runners-up of J Hill and J Kincaid. This week’s events kicked off with members enjoying their last outing of this session which took place on Tuesday of this week with their favourite games afternoon planned at the centre on Thursday afternoon, followed with a dancing session on Friday. Members are also now looking forward to their forthcoming holiday to Lytham St Anne’s later this month. For information on any of the above, contact Mary on 01555 772214.
