Federer is the greatest ever

-

In case you perhaps doubted it, Roger Federer cemented his place as the greatest ever tennis player on Sunday.

On Centre Court at Wimbledon – the scene of so many Federer successes through the years – he swept aside a very talented Marin Cilic in three sets.

Federer hardly broke sweat and the classy Swiss ace recorded a Wimbledon win without dropping a set.

The first man to do so in 41 years he is now the guy who holds the most Wimbledon titles, with an amazing eight victories at SW19.

Federer himself had only managed to win one major before without a dropping a set, and that was the Australian Open back in 2007.

Ten years on and the 35-year-old is still making the rest of the tennis world look on in disbelief.

When Novak Djokovic retires with injury, Andy Murray hobbles out of the tournament at the quarter-finals and Rafael Nadal is beaten in a marathon match in week one, it really defies all logic how Federer keeps going.

Time has stood still for the man who has lifted 19 Grand Slams in his career.

Meanwhile, the gruelling tennis schedule seems to be catching up on his three closest rivals.

But in all honesty, as great as the trio are, they will never be referred to as the greatest tennis player ever.

That is a title which belongs to one man and you get a feeling he might not be ready to hang up his racquet anytime soon.

After winning two of the first three majors this year – bearing in mind he skipped the French Open – he is a serious contender for the US Open.

However, after winning five titles in a row at the Arthur Ashe stadium he has not tasted success in New York since 2008.

However, he missed out on the tournament last year and in 2015 he reached the final and with the rest of the tennis world seemingly in disarray, you would be a fool to bet against Federer.

Looking back at Wimbledon, it won’t be remembered as one of the better years but for tennis fans, the ending was truly special.

The worst part of the whole fortnight was watching Andy Murray limping around Centre Court against Sam Querrey.
