Rough justice Visitors hold firm to frustrate the Blackhawks

It was an unlucky 13 for the Clyde Valley Blackhawks as they drew with Aberdeen Roughnecks on Sunday.

After picking up a victory over the Roughnecks on the opening day of the season, the Wishaw outfit were held to a 13-13 draw.

At Wishaw Sports Centre, the defences held firm in the opening stages but it was Aberdeen who drew first blood.

CVB’s Stephen Cranston sacked the Aberdeen QB to pin them deep in their own half, but Roughnecks quarterback Chris Breen completed the pass to Philip McCall who scampered upfield for the opening score.

McCall then turned kicker to make the extra point.

Both teams traded sacks as defences were on top of the game and the Blackhawks struggled to find a score.

But in the second quarter, the hosts took over and some power running from Dylan Yardley brought the Blackhawks up to the one-yard line before Graeme McMillan crossed the line.

John Neill levelled the score at seven points apiece with the extra point.

On Aberdeen’s next drive, McCall was really unlucky when his 36- yard field goal attempt hit off the upright and bounced to the crossbar and out.

The third quarter started strongly for the Blackhawks when Craig MacMillan forced a fumble, which was recovered by Steven Cranston, but the Blackhawks were unable to capitalize on this.

Steven Anderson added another interception for the Blackhawks on Aberdeen’s next drive to give Clyde Valley the ball on the 16-yard line.

However, a fumble by Blackhawks was picked up by the Roughnecks who raced 84 yards to take their lead to 13-7 before missing the extra point.

It was a miss which proved to be costly as some powerful running by Jordan Mair set up quarterback Gary Orr who carried the ball over for the tying touchdown from one yard out.

Aberdeen had a chance to win the game in the final seconds with a field goal but a heroic rush by the Blackhawks’ defence prevented the score.

Clyde Valley would like to thank the Commercial for their continued sponsorship, the chain crew and all the fans who turned out to support.

The next home game is on August 13 against Dumfries Hunters.
