Prison on lockdown after double slashing

Two men hospitalised

- Michael Temlett

Two prisoners were slashed by a fellow inmate at HMP Shotts last week.

The incident happened around 11am last Tuesday, with both victims taken to Wishaw General Hospital before going to the plastic surgery unit at Monklands Hospital.

The prison was on lockdown following the attacks, with police making a beeline to the Canthill Road site before taking away a man believed to be the attacker.

The two injured inmates are expected to return to prison earlier this week following their treatment at the hospital.

One prison source told the Wishaw Press: “The whole place was on lockdown and nobody could go anywhere for about four hours.

“There were police officers and what looked like forensic teams and everyone was moved away from the scene pretty quickly.”

A man was arrested following the incident and a spokesperson from the Scottish Prison Service said: “An incident took place on Tuesday, July 25 at HMP Shotts.

“Two men were taken to Wishaw General Hospital, then Monklands Hospital in the aftermath.

“It would be inappropriate for us to comment any further on the incident.”

Earlier this year, we reported how a serving Shotts prisoner stabbed a fellow inmate with a piece of metal before setting fire to his cell.

Paul Ferguson was sentenced to a further four years and two months after pleading guilty to repeatedly striking Ahmed Yazdanparast with the piece of metal in the prison.

And in June, convicted armed robber Thomas Stevenson pleaded guilty to striking prison guard Stuart Sproull on the face with a razor blade inside a prison wing.

The court was shown chilling CCTV footage from the incident from June last year which showed 38-year-old Stevenson slashing Mr Sproull in the face before running back down a hall.

Sentence was deferred on Stevenson until October 23.
